These images are impressive and interesting in their own right...and there are many stories behind them. Very sadly, the home of Clifton Pugh, and where Jake studied, was burnt down some time ago in the Victorian Bush Fires, along with these and many other original artworks.
Picture
The All Seeing Eye
Picture
ANGEL GUIDE Oil on Canvas, created in Ferny Creek. The painting is a representation of the female spirit released and flying free. With her multicolored wings she flies forth with the dawning of a new age.
Picture
TOUCHED Oil Mono-Print on Copper Plate, Printed onto Watercolor Paper. This mono-print is based on the concept that we are never alone. There are always forces that are there to help us through life’s challenges. To sooth and protect us in our journey through life.
Picture
SOULFULL Acrylic on Watercolor Paper. This painting represents the unlocking of the human spirit and was created in Ferny Creek whilst I was working on my artistic pursuits. It was inspired by the beautiful forests and the natural environment of the Dandenong Ranges.
Picture
DANCER Chalk on Watercolor Paper. Represents the joy and energy of a dancer in mid flight as she celebrates the music.
Picture
Picture
WIZARD’S JOURNEY Oil Mono-Print on Watercolor Paper. The Wizard’s consciousness has many forms by which he can travel throughout the spectrum of time. Dunmoochin series.
Picture
FRACTURED Mixed Mediums, framed on a collage of backing board. This piece represents the fracturing of ancient wisdom, balance and harmony by the Industrial and Consumerist factions of modern society as a whole.
Picture
Picture
SELF PORTRAIT Oil on Canvas, created in North Fitzroy. Self Portrait that represents the myriad of emotions that so often swirl through our maturing lives as we endeavor to unfold our artistic potential.
Picture
AWAKENING Acrylic and Raven Oil on Watercolor Paper. Symbolizes the flowing and migratory transitions of life. Created in Sassafras, Victoria.
Picture
TRANSENDANCE Acrylic on Watercolor Paper. To me this painting can be likened to an unfolding piece of music. Created in Ferny Creek.
Picture
THE DRUNKEN FOOL Acrylic on Canvas. The Drunken Fool represents the delusion of human consciousness under the full effects of alcohol. The beautiful colors of his life blur and the façade, of which he has subscribed to, holds nothing but illusion and inebriated promiscuity.
Picture
PHOENIX RISING Ink, Pencil and Oil on Watercolor Paper. Another work that is part of the Dunmoochin series. It represents ‘light-workers’ who seek to cool the burning flames of greed, power and manipulation of the masses in modern civilization.
Picture
EPIPHANY Acrylic on Canvas. This art work represents the harmonized potential that we have as people. A balance of energy, vibration and Free Expressionism.
Picture
THE OLD DUNMOOCHIN Oil on Masonite. This painting is one of the most significant of the Dunmoochin series. It is one of the main rooms in Clifton Pugh’s house where I felt his presence the strongest. After talking with various people associated with foundation, I learnt that where I have painted Clifton’s spirit at the top of the stairs was where he had his last fatal heart attack.
Picture
GATEWAY Oil on Masonite. Created as a Shamanistic Premonition painting. One of the larger works from the Dunmoochin series. The background was inspired by the entrance of Clifton Pugh’s magnificent double story artistically built house.
Picture
THE PREMINIOTION Raven Oil and Ink on Canvas. Another premonition painted created in the Dandenong Ranges pre-bushfire session. Two weeks later I found myself walking down a road in the forest where one side had been burnt out and the other untouched as in the painting.
Picture
EPHEMERAL CROSS Acrylic, Pencil, Ink and Raven Oil on Watercolor Paper. The Ephemeral Cross explores various ways in which religion has been used as a tool of persecution over the centuries. It asks the question, ‘...how many things have been crucified by various religious beliefs?’ Part of the Dunmoochin series.
Picture
MANTRA Pencil, Acrylic and Black Ink on Watercolor Paper. Mantra is very much a representation of the awakening of transcendental levels of consciousness through breath-work, meditation and creative visualisation. Created in North Fitzroy.
Picture
NIGHT DANCER Oil Mono-print enhanced with Black Ink on Paper. The female spirit that is central within this piece symbolizes the free expression of a women naked and unrestricted as she dances in Mother Nature in the night. Part of the Dunmoochin series.
Picture
Picture
SPIRIT TREE Oil on Paper Mono-Print from Copper Plate. Spirit tree represents the mysterious and beautiful life-giving power of Mother Nature. Dunmoochin series.
Picture
SHARMAN DREAMING Acrylic and Ink Mono-Print on Paper. The figure in this piece appeared once the paint started to flow on the copper plate. It had a Shamanistic/spirit-like quality that I enhanced with black ink to bring the image forth.
Picture
PANDORA Acrylic on Canvas, created in my residency at Ferny Creek, Mt Dandenong, Victoria. This was one of the first paintings of the Fragments of the Spirit series and it represents an opening of abstract perception.
Picture
PERCEPTION PLATES Oil on Canvas, created in Essendon, Victoria prior to my departure to Europe. It is part of a series that was an exploration into the Rave culture when it first emerged in the various rural locations around Australia. The series focused upon the people who participated in these events and festivals, looking at the ways in which their ‘inner creatures’ could express themselves freely within the developing Rave culture.
Picture
Picture
MOVING THROUGH ABSTRACT Oil and Black Ink on Canvas. Leaping through the Worlds of the Abstract was another of the Rave series, inspired by the people involved in the dance revolution movement.
Picture
OTHER SOUL Oil on Masonite and a significant part of the Dunmoochin series. This painting is a representation of the female side that often lies dormant within the male consciousness. She awaits recognition, love and respect.
Picture
VISION Acrylic on Masonite. Another work from the Dunmoochin series. It represents the presence of the higher spirit and consciousness in a time of need. The melting of solidity giving way to different dimensions of thinking.

“Fragments of the Spirit” - An Artistic Journey

“I hope that you enjoy my works and they inspire your journey in this beautifully profound life. Peace.” Jacob (Jake) Brookes.

Jake Brookes is a resident Artist, Musician, Writer and Actor at Glenelg Art Gallery, South Australia

The majority of these works were created in his residency at Clifton Pugh's artists retreat called Dunmoochin, located one hour from Melbourne in Cottles Bridge. Free Expressionism was the theme under which these artworks were created and they represent the symbolic melding of dreaming and waking consciousness.

It was an unique opportunity to create in one of Australia’s most successful artists houses and to work alongside some incredible international artists who had also been accepted by the Dunmoochin Foundation to do Residences’ in the local artist community.

This experience with Dunmoochin was highly influential in his artistic development, appreciation for the Arts and connected him to some profound circles of internationally renowned and emerging artists from around the world.

His artistic journey began as a classically trained violinist from the age of six. And this appreciation for music is reflected in the Art that he creates today.  Painting, sculpting, writing, composing music and acting are all part of the one magic circle that governs his artistic journey. These artworks, he is now offering as Limited Edition prints, so that their stories may be appreciated by the larger community.  All works were created in forest and rural environments and he is excited to have these works on display in Adelaide for the first time.

Any queries regarding any of the artworks please contact the Glenelg Art Gallery for further information.

Many of the artworks from the ‘Fragments of the Spirit’ series are also featured in the artwork of the solo album that he is currently working on in Adelaide entitled “Songbook”. The songs off his first solo album entitled “Rara Avis”, recorded in Canberra by the renowned engineer, composer, musician, artist  and producer  Harvey Welsh; are currently available as free downloads to your play list at www.myspace.com/jb99973 for a short time only.  Several of the Artworks from ‘Fragments of the Spirit’ accompany the songs on this site.

‘I believe in these paintings as they are fragments of my spirit. They communicate things that my words cannot. I hope that you enjoy my works and they inspire your journey. For on a journey we go and flow… As the miles pass we start to know Peace.’
